Welcome to the 4th Grade team page. This is another year of transition for your children. Our goal is to make this year an exciting and motivating experience for your children into the middle school environment. Most of our instruction takes place in one classroom; however, your children do go out for specials (art, music, library, technology, physical education.) Please see the individual pages for information on what is taught in those classrooms.

This page will provide you with an overview of 4th grade curriculum. It is not comprehensive but we wanted you to understand the basis for what your child will be learning. Please remember that all learning takes place in steps. Children need to be able to construct their own meaning of information from prior learning.

Language Arts
Language arts literacy is a core skill that children need to master to be able to succeed in the world today. This involves more than just being able to read. Click here for the NJCCCS for Language Arts. Students need to know how to listen, follow directions, speak confidently, and write effectively.

We use a literature infused curriculum to aid in attaining literacy. This is a useful site to help your child with literature selections. Newbery Award Winners or look at the page for best selling children's books.

All children can write, even at an early age. Read this article for useful ideas that parents can employ to encourage writing.  Here is good site for helping your child with grammar.

Mathematics
Within the NJCCCS math standards there are five strands. Our math program addresses each of these strands.
The way math is taught has changed. Read this article to see how it has changed. This site will help when your child asks for help with their math homework.

Your child can use this site to increase their basic math skills.

Science
Our program provides an introduction to the specific areas that are fully explored through the 6th-8th grades. You can review the NJCCCS for science. Through out the course of the year we will cover:

  • Earth Science , the study of the planet
  • Life Science, the study of living organisms and
  • Physical Science, the study of the natural world.

Use fact monster to help with basic reference questions about science. Search through the topics for areas that interest your child.

Social Studies
Developmentally, children are beginning to understand that they are only part of the larger society. During this year we begin to study government and the concept of citizenship. The study of New Jersey history provides a means through which we can help children place themselves. You can review the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards - Social Studies. Use this site to help your child with ready reference facts about New Jersey.

This website from the Library of Congress is a good portal for introducing social studies in the broader context. Another recommended resource is the Internet Public Library for information on a variety of social studies topics.
