This year we will read some novels and short stories. We will continue to develop our writings skills and explore poetry. Please use the sources on these pages to help you in your study. We will read these great books and have profound discussions. Here is the list of books and websites to help you understand the time and place of the book. Please note: other novels may be added or these selections may change. Students are not expected to read nor are they encouraged to read these novels before entering 7th grade.

Novels

The Acorn People - Ron Jones

An unemployed teacher takes a job at a summer camp for disabled children. The extent of the physical disabilities is not fully understood until he arrives at the camp and gets to know his campers. The campers teach him that what you are on the outside is only a fraction of who you truly are. Some sites about developmental disabilities for you to look at and learn from.

This is the site from the CDC which will answer basic questions about developmental disabilities.

A Christmas Carol - Charles Dickens

This is ghost story written by Dickens where three ghosts visit Ebenezer Scrooge on Christmas Eve. We all the story, sort of. Use these sites to help you understand the text.

Even, though this is a commercial site there is a lot of fascinating information about Dickens, the work and Victorian England. http://www.fidnet.com/~dap1955/dickens/christmas.html
