BELVIDERE HIGH SCHOOL Graduation Requirements
- All classes are required to complete a minimum of 120 credits.
- Credit Base: Five credits are earned for a course that meets one period each school day all year. Two and one half credits (2 1/2 ) are earned for a course that meets on period each school day for a half-year or one semester course. [ In cases where courses meet additional periods per week, all year, credit is proportionally earned. Marking period length courses are assigned 1.25 credits.]
- All students and all courses are included in computing the class rank. Additional weight is given to courses accepted as college preparatory courses in English, Social Studies, Science Mathematics and World Language. These courses are the academic areas in which students must meet minimum units of instruction for college admission. Advanced Placement courses are assigned eight additional points, accelerated classes four additional points and college preparatory class two additional points. The additional points are only assigned when computing the class rank. Report card grades and final transcript grades reflect the actual grade earned by the student in the course without additional points that are used in computing class rank. Honor roll selection is based on the actual grade earned in the course without the additional points used in computing class rank.
- Summer school courses are included in the determination of a student’s grade point average and class rank. Summer school courses are given the same weight as a course taken during the regular school year. A students’ rank will be determined by first obtaining quality points for each course and then dividing the total number of credits attempted. Quality points are calculated by multiplying a course’s weighted final grade by the number of corresponding credits.
- Senior G.P.A. is computed at the end of the third marking period to determine valedictorian, salutatorian and top ten academic students. In order for a student to be considered a “top ten academic student” s/he must have enrolled at BHS prior to the beginning of the fourth marking period of her/his junior year.
- Students must pass the State of New Jersey High School Proficiency Assessment (HSPA) in order to graduate from high school. Mathematics, writing and reading skills of students are measured by the HSPA.
- All courses will be offered to students without regard to race, color, national origin, creed, sex, or handicap.
