The Civil War was fought between the Northern states and the Southern States. The North, or the Union, opposed slavery,
and felt that they were fighting the war to free the slaves. The South, or the Confederates, was for slavery. They felt that
they were fighting for independence. The North provided for themselves from factories and trade, and felt that the tax on
European goods should be higher so the Southerners would start buying Northern products. The South however, provided for
themselves through their farms and plantations. They also wanted to lower the taxes on goods. The North believed that the most
important thing was to save the Union, but the South believed that the most important thing was states’ rights.

E. Lee.

Some important people on the side of the south included; Jefferson Davis, General Robert E. Lee, and Thomas Jackson. Jefferson Davis
was the President of the Confederate States. General Robert E. Lee was the leader of the Confederate Army in Northern Virginia. Though
fighting for the south, Robert E. Lee was against succession, though he did not want to force unity, so he urged the southerners to
accept defeat. Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson was a Confederate General from Virginia.
