The Civil War in America were the conflicts that led to war in the United States, from 1861 to 1865. All the deaths of American soldiers,
of the opposing sides were both from our honorable country. The Union, led by President Lincoln were the northern states. They fought for
many reasons including freeing the slaves and keeping the country together as a union. The Confederate side, consisting of the southern
states, had declared their succession from the United States, and called themselves the Confederate States of America. They even elected
a new President, President Davis. The war resulted in more than 970,000 casualties and a 560,000 person death toll. If the Confederates had won,
the United States of America would be two separate countries even today, but fortunately that was not the case. The Union won a decisive
victory and the times that followed were known as the period of Reconstruction, an extremely difficult time in American history when
the country had to heal its wounds and reunite itself as a strong, prosperous country. There is much controversy on the reasons the events
unfolded, but it is known for sure that the United States could be very different today if the war had not played out as it did.
