 Homecoming, Football Games, and  Everything

Yes, the pun was intended. If you’ve ever read any of Douglas Adams’s stories from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series, you are undoubtedly aware of the witty and abstract humor the author inserts on every page.
Well, this month was nothing short of humorous, sad, stressful, and downright ridiculous. Between Spirit Week, Homecoming, pep rallies, and school work (of course, we can’t forget that), the amount of things going on was enough to make your head roll off. I’ve come to expect it as a senior, but the general feeling you get about these activities changes after all these years.
Unlike in the past, they don’t seem repetitive, but almost saddening. This was my last Homecoming, and although I never came to care about such things before, I am suddenly hit with a pang of remorse at the thought of never experiencing them again.

That being said, Homecoming and Spirit Week are two topics that several of our writers chose to talk about this month. Carley Schumann and Coleen Carney, two of our freshmen staff members, took this opportunity to talk about their first Homecoming experience here at Belvidere High School. For those of us who have been around the block for a while, it certainly brings back some memories from bygone days. On the other hand, Rebecca Carney, a senior, wrote about her last Homecoming here at Belvidere and what it means to her. Though underclassmen will not understand the emotion she conveys in her article, it is a wonderful example of how each and every moment of our high school days should be cherished. Even though our last year is “sweet” in the sense that we finally made it after all these years, it is also “bitter” because we will never be together as a class again.

David Yannarella talks about the Homecoming football game against Dayton, a truly amazing spectacle that had people on the edge of their seats despite the cold (also, don't forget to check out his pictures from the hallway decorating). Jessica Wasser gives us some insight into the history and origins of Halloween, and also talks about the college application process (something every senior dreads). Jack Pierone sat down with three of the most influential members of student government to find out what exactly they have in store for us this year, and what they think of their jobs as student leaders.

Oh, and don’t forget to check out the Media Reel. We have plenty of pictures from the game and pep rally, including Mr. Coyle and Mr. Wisner being drenched in some sort of alien goo (they call it slime, but who really knows).

I’d also like to take this opportunity to introduce Natasha Kowaleuski, a new addition to our writing staff, and the only person whose last name I have to ensure is spelled correctly every time I type it (I’m just joking). Natasha has chosen to write short reviews of the books she reads for your viewing pleasure. Hopefully after reading her articles, the next time you’re in the mall you’ll walk into the bookstore and not past it.

October, as upperclassmen know, is always a crazy month. The first month “adjustment” period of school is now over, and the work is quickly piling in. Enjoy those last few vestiges of freedom while you can, and in the meantime, why not give The Scarlet Scoop a read?
