On March 16th, Belvidere students who are members of Extended Learners had the opportunity to participate in W.H.A.M. W.H.A.M. is an abbreviation for the Warren-Hunterdon Academic Meet, which is held semi-annually, once in winter and once in spring. It is a competition in which students answer questions from a myriad of topics, from music theory to ancient history. The competition consists of three preliminary rounds, and then one final round between the two teams with the highest scores.

At the spring W.H.A.M., there was an excessive amount of people who wanted to participate. Each of our teams was double the size of every other school’s team, although only four players could be in at a time. The only difficulty was being able to build teams out of alternates which would have an even blend.

Personally I found the questions at this competition to be more challenging than those at the winter W.H.A.M. competition. Although the team I was on answered more questions correctly than in the previous competition, it was because of the unique combination of minds and interests that we were able to do so.

At this competition, Belvidere Team A scored 250 points, which is the highest that our school has scored for quite some time. However, we were far from the final round. The champion was Hunterdon Central Team A, who beat out North Hunterdon Team A in the final round by a decisive margin.

Defeat was not too sour, however. Belvidere Team A was able to hold their heads high with a score impressive for Belvidere, and they reigned over Belvidere Team B in points. I also had the opportunity to talk to one of my friends on the W.H.A.T., the Warren Hills Academic Team, since we shared the bus with Warren Hills. The sweetest part of the day? Stopping for Italian Ice at Rita’s on the way back to school.

All in all, W.H.A.M. was great once again. We were able to build upon our last score, and bring home the best score in years. I can not wait for next year’s competitions because as far as I can see, the only way for Belvidere’s scores to go is up.
