The Start of Softball
by Coleen CarneyMonday, May 3 2010
The
2010 Belvidere High school Softball season started in the beginning of March, and
girls came into the season optimistic and willing to try their hardest. For
their efforts, many were rewarded. Some girls were cut, but they kept good
attitudes through it all and most are determined to try out next year. In the
end, there were a total of about 50 girls in the softball program. This year
there is a team for freshman, junior varsity, and varsity. The teams are comprised
of about fifteen girls each. The coach for the freshman team is Mr. Leh, the JV
team’s coach is Miss Allmer and the varsity team is coached by Mr. Poyer and
Mr. Dempsey. Everyone seems to be doing well.
In
my opinion softball is a great sport that, at Belvidere, has some of the best
coaches. Mr. Leh is my coach and he “drills the fundamentals.” He works with
the team and tells us how we can improve, which is an aspect of a great coach.
Pre-season consisted of long minute drills and a hard work ethic but it was
worth it in the end. We’ve now had numerous practices and that’s the one thing
I look forward to in my day. Softball is my way to relax at the end of a hard,
long day.
A
freshman softball player’s daily routine is going to school and then practicing
every day until about five o’ clock. For me, I then go home, eat dinner, clean
up and then have just enough time to do my homework. I give a lot of credit to
all athletes for the work they put into their sport. When involved in the
season it’s not only a lot of physical hard work but it’s a lot of mental hard
work. A person’s dedication shows when the girls are on the field.
The
captains for the freshman team are Kasie Lyons and Erin McCrea. The team
decided on them because the two girls are encouraging, pay attention and make
wonderful leaders. The freshman record includes two scrimmages at 4-0. Let’s
just hope that we can keep our season going well.
This
year the freshman team did secret sisters. Much like other teams do in
Belvidere, we all picked a name out of a hat, and whoever’s name we got, made
them posters for the rest of the season. The posters include encouraging
sayings and quotes for that person. We also get that person food for away
games. Most people want a little encouragement before a game. The person who
makes signs for you is supposed to be a secret, but this year, we all got a
little too excited and now everyone knows their not so “secret” sister.
When
asked how she thinks the season is going, Paige Osifichin said, “I think it’s
going well. There’s a lot of new talent.” Paige is a senior varsity player who
has played all four years of softball in high school. Paige thinks the year is
going to turn out well because she said, “The girls are making contact with the
best pitcher in New Jersey.” They have a good shot of doing well but there are
not any captains yet.
I
believe that this softball season will go great. The three freshmen who are
playing on varsity at the moment are Jessie Sharr, Kylie Desjadon, and Leslee
Sena. They work hard every day in practices and are determined to give it their
all. There are some sophomores that are playing on varsity as well, but no freshmen
are playing on JV. Every single girl in the program has talent and because of
the coaches, that talent will grow until the season ends in May.
