Caroling for the Holidays
by Rebecca CarneyThursday, January 7 2010
We
left during second period and hopped on the bus to the center. Mrs. O’Neil, the student government advisor
who went with us, passed out a packet of all the holiday songs, most of them geared
towards Christmas. Everyone was excited
and practiced on the way there, and this notched up the Christmas spirit
immensely. When we arrived, we met up with four more seniors who had spread
Christmas joy on the radio that morning.
They joined us and added to the singing group. There was a sure feeling of togetherness when
we walked into the center.
As
soon as we arrived we began singing. One
of the receptionists led us on a tour as we sang songs such as Holy Night, We Wish You a Merry Christmas, and many more. Although we are not all in the music program
at our school, our voices sounded fantastic.
The elderly even sang along!
Another
part of the trip that made it special was our Santa Claus. Greg Ritter wore an elaborate outfit, complete
with black boots and a red hat. He shook
everyone’s hand and wished them a Happy Holiday. The people residing in the Lopatcong Care
Center appreciated this so much. Some of
them cried, weeping in tears of joy, while others laughed in happiness. Greg did a fantastic job of supplying even
more spirit to the carolers and the people we sang to.
I
absolutely loved this trip. Seeing the
appreciative and loving faces of those we sang to was more of a gift then I
ever could have asked for. This time of
year is about giving all of yourself in hopes of presenting joy and harmony to
those around you. Giving even the simple
thing of song to unexpected and disheartened patients is worth everything. I look forward to caroling every year and it
really brings gratitude and understanding to the holiday spirit for all.
