Weatherly Winter
by Justin KieferSunday, December 13 2009
We
all know of that old, timeless saying of “hell freezing over.” Yet even if it
did freeze over, wouldn’t it still be hell?
Perhaps
I shouldn’t be making such an analogy around the time of Christmas (forgive me),
but it’s ironic that one of the most joyful happenings in our human history has
become plagued with busywork and shopping. The only “bells” you ever hear ring
anymore are the sounds of the cash registers opening. Children “sing” to their
parents for that one, single toy that they’ve always wanted (but will discard
in several years). Sleigh bells, you ask? How many sleds have you seen rushing
down mountains of white this year? Santa is still here, although I’ve heard
numerous reports of elves being laid off due to the economy (the Easter Bunny
is still hiring, however).
Okay,
so I’m not that pessimistic. The end
of the year has been going fairly well for me, with both of our concerts over
and nothing left but a clear shot to the holidays. The work is still piling on,
but is definitely manageable if you stop to take a breather every now and then.
This
month’s issue brings a close to the football season, and I’d like to thank
David Yannarella for doing an excellent job of covering the games over these
last few months. David ties up his experiences very well in his article, so be
sure to give it a read if you’ve been following the season (make sure you check
out his pictures as well). On the other side of the coin, Coleen Carney writes
about her experience at the Powder Puff game that pitted girl against girl in
an all-out night of flag football. These games are always entertaining to watch,
and it’s kind of amusing watching our lovely dames go after the pigskin. Rebecca
Carney gives you some insight into Belvidere’s newest student run
organizations, STAND (of which she is a founding member) and the Diversity
Club. As someone who enjoys politics and world cultures greatly, I encourage you
to take a look at her article and find out more about these new organizations.
I’m
also proud to announce that The Scarlet
Scoop has taken on a new writer, Alison Bancroft. In addition to writing
for the paper, Alison is a member of Scarlet Choir, plays field hockey, runs
track, and will be participating in this year’s musical. If you missed the
talent show, be sure to give her article a read!
Lastly,
on behalf of the entire Scarlet Scoop staff,
I’d like to wish everyone a very Merry
Christmas. Life is not simple, but for a short moment we can all enjoy it
together, for the birth of our Savior brings us hope.
